Direct-ink write process by means of a novel Rubber ink formulations including high solid content

A novel and applicable technology for future applications such as smart devices and airless tires is Additive manufacturing (AM). The recent researches showed that natural rubber, which is used with restricted processing techniques in the tire industry, has barriers for use in AM technology due to the high pressure and temperatures needed to process it.

According to this issue, a research work has performed by authors of Akron University. The motivation of this study is to specify if natural rubber can be used as a 3D printable material. For this purpose, natural rubber latex (NL) was applied as the basis for a printable ink. Liquid rubber was interned to the NL in various amounts to increase the amount of solid in the ink so as to modify its 3D printability and prevent shrinkage, and sulfur and other additives were combined into the mixture to facilitate vulcanization. In this study, the rheological characteristics of inks were examined for consistent extrusion in addition for shape retention in the printed parts. Dimensional accuracy, printability, and mechanical properties of 3D printed samples have been examined. Applying a direct-print AM system and the developed rubber ink, several 3D structures were manufactured to show that the developed ink is a good candidate for future rubber applications.
