Styrene butadiene crumb rubber infill in artificial turf sports fields

Currently, a new chapter was written in the field of Styrene butadiene crumb rubber infill in artificial turf sports fields

Currently, a new chapter was written in the field of Styrene butadiene crumb rubber infill in artificial turf sports fields. There are a lot of literature about the tire recycling market itself and the technical processes used during the end-of-life of the tires, but this chapter focuses on a very particular and specific application of the end product in sport: artificial turf playing fields.

In fact, the core link between used tires and sport – with an obvious focus on football as the largest single user of such installations – lies in the crumb rubber infill used within artificial turf playing surfaces, which has to a great extent proven to be a win-win for both industries in the past but is facing increasing challenges from legislators, society, and technical novelties. All of these considerations will be explored in more depth in the course of this chapter.

Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) is surely a much-needed current staple for the development of football (and other sports) due to its economic value for money but has been coming under pressure from internal and external stakeholders placing a degree of uncertainty over the future application of SBR in sports infrastructure should laws change or technology allow for more appropriate long-dated replacement.
